Peter was angry. A friend had repeatedly sinned against him. Peter couldn’t take it anymore, so he came to talk to Jesus (which was a great idea, I must add). Peter was proud of himself, and explained to Jesus how he had already forgiven his friend multiple times. Peter asked, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus was not impressed. He told Peter to forgive seventy times seven. Meaning, keep on forgiving, endlessly.
This is not how our culture operates. People today keep track of offenses. But Jesus tells us that if we do not forgive others, we will not be forgiven (Matthew 6:14-15). That is chilling. Take a moment and think about that. What are you holding onto that you need to release into the hands of Almighty God?
Today, let it go. It’s a new day. It’s a fresh start - for you, and for whoever has sinned against you. Forgive, as you have been forgiven by God.
